FULL HOUSE is a hand in Texas Hold’em poker consisting of three cards of one rank and a pair of another—also known in Chinese as “captured” or “calabash.” Texas Hold’em itself can be viewed not only as a card game but also as a form of strategic confrontation.

This kind of confrontation mirrors a kind of struggle.

The exhibition unfolds like a live, moment-to-moment battle, featuring various figures of domestic “Old D” toys. “Old D” is a colloquial term referring to early, unlicensed toys produced in China—often the prizes in lucky draws at small shops near elementary schools. As children, the anticipation of drawing a coveted toy was a tense moment of readiness, a miniature act of resistance. At the same time, we were also partly “captured” by the emotional pull of these desirable toys. The title FULL HOUSE carries the twisted connotation of both struggle and captivity from childhood—an entanglement that continues to echo through our perceptual world and becomes a mode of resistance, one that faces the vast and unresolved realities of our present.

This exhibition presents over ten new works by Zhang Ting. The spatial arrangement recalls an archaeological dig on a poker table, unearthing fragments of youth. The works evoke the plastic shells typical of “Old D” toys while mimicking characteristics of unearthed relics. For the artist, these shells manifest as folds in memory—a resurfacing of the absent, as if a part of the collective experience has been lost to time. In examining this absence, we search for ways to reengage with the world, to rediscover how we once resisted.

In the moment when a poker hand and a buried memory align, adult amusement and childhood joy overlap—their misalignment becomes a captured memory. In this ongoing game of chance and will, may we all draw a FULL HOUSE.
